They won’t be around for long. Lithia’s stocks have tumbled, even though 2015 was a record year for U.S. auto sales (Mail Tribune, Jan. 13). Is the “glut of car inventory” connected with the glut of crude oil from the fracking boom? Many oil-related industries are having problems. Graphs of trends in the oil industries show that the boom is turning into a bubble, as predicted by skeptics. Drilling of new wells has plummeted, beginning about a year ago: http://onforb.es/1QfxJyT shows the detailed record for the past 16 months. Another graph shows that the steep drop in drilling preceded the peak in production by only two months: http://bit.ly/1S5B6KH ; “even the most optimistic believer in the U.S. shale miracle has to admit the tide has turned.” Two geophysical factors combined with the irrational exuberance of investors and market gamblers to almost guarantee that the new fracking technology would generate a startup bubble. More on that later. Can we identify the possible connection to Lithia’s problems? Dean Ayers Medford Vote smart I must confess to feeling a bit of glee when I spot a letter to the editor from Michael Steely. Like Chief Bromden in Ken Kesey’s "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest," Steely again rages against the "Combine" in his Sunday letter. Steely trots out the Media Matters talking points and attacks various Republican candidates. While not registered with any party, I offer an opposing view of Mr. Steely’s candidates. Martin O’Malley, who ran the state of Maryland into near bankruptcy and, as mayor of Baltimore, turned the city into racial chaos. A card-carrying socialist, Bernie Sanders is committed to income redistribution and taxation that would destroy our way of life in this country. Finally, the gem of Mr. Steely’s choice for president: Mrs. Clinton, a progressive. An abject failure as secretary of state. A person proven to be a liar in many forums. A person who covers up the "bimbo eruptions" of her husband. A person who clearly violated multiple federal statutes with regard to her government email accounts. Mr. Steely should really take a good look at "America’s dark side." To paraphrase the commercial: "Always vote, my friend, but when you vote, vote smart." We can help ensure this is the legacy we leave to our children and grandchildren in a variety of ways. Personally and locally we can conserve energy and water, plant trees, install LED lights, add insulation and solar, ride a bike, influence town councils, etc. At federal and state levels, simply refuse to vote for candidates who take money from the lying polluters (the fossil fuel industry). If enough of us follow that simple rule we can make our voices count more than fossil-fuel bribes. But right now, today, this very second in fact, we have a huge opportunity to invigorate our Oregon economy and ensure cleaner energy with one pending bill. The 2016 Healthy Climate Bill will make polluters pay for their pollution instead of putting it all on the shoulders of suffering taxpayers. And the time to speak up to support this bill is now.
