Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 19, 2005 Since You Asked Separate checks not required by law Hi, I have read, heard, somehow understand that if when in a restaurant with other people, and the party requests separate checks, the establishment must provide them. Is this a law? A number of us have discussed this and would love to know for sure. Thanks — Dodi C., Ashland Just as you can’t call the restaurant police if your salad dressing doesn’t show up on the side, separate checks (the last time we checked) are offered as a courtesy. Some restaurants, like Medford’s Kaleidoscope Pizza, don’t allow separate checks because they slow down things in the kitchen and force the cashier to tally up bill after bill before letting a party out the door, the pizzeria’s employees said. Banning separate checks can save restaurateurs the extra fee for running two credit cards per table instead of one. Another likely reason for not allowing diners to split the bill is to thwart attempts at avoiding minimum gratuities for large parties. Advertisement While most restaurants happily accommodate separate checks, patrons should ask up front. Servers say they work hard enough without trying to remember after the fact what each and every person ordered and assigning the meal to the appropriate check. But the bottom line is: if you’re that worried about who’s footing the bill, you’re probably not enjoying your restaurant experience to the fullest.
