Oregon’s starting quarterback had another sensational performance on Saturday, guiding the ninth-ranked Ducks to a 45-20 win over Washington at Autzen Stadium. The junior threw for 336 yards and two touchdowns on 24 of 33 passing to extend his streak of games with a passing touchdown to 33 — the second-longest active streak in the nation behind Marshall’s Rakeem Cato, who has a TD throw in 38 straight games. Mariota now has 82 career TD passes in those 33 games. For Mariota, though, the joy came not in extending his TD streak, but in beating the Huskies for the 11th straight time. “For this community and for the university, it is definitely a special time,” Mariota said. “It raises the pride around here. It is always a huge win every year.” Mariota also went his eighth game without an interception, a streak that dates back to last season’s regular-season finale against Oregon State and includes 238 pass attempts. He already owns the Pac-12 record for passes-thrown without an interception at 353 set between the 2012 and 2013 seasons. In his three-year career, Mariota has thrown just 10 interceptions on 910 pass attempts. LOPSIDED RIVALRY: Even though it’s been years since the rivalry with Washington has been competitive, it still resonates with the players. “UW hates us and we hate UW,” Oregon running back Byron Marshall said. “There’s no lack of rivalry there. We know when we get together that it’s going to be a chippy game and a dogfight. Every team’s going to come out and give us their best punches, but UW will definitely come out harder. We just kept moving forward knowing it’d be a fight.” The Ducks have so dominated the Huskies the last decade that Saturday’s 25-point margin of victory actually was less than the 25.4-point average during the previous 10 wins. Washington receiver John Ross said the losing streak to Oregon came up just once during the week and that he tried not to think about it. “We do not care about the streak,” Ross said. “That’s not what is important to us. Oregon is less important than what people think they are to us. Of course we want to beat them; we don’t want to lose to no one. We’re shooting for a Pac-12 championship and Oregon is one of the teams in the way and we didn’t do what we had to do tonight to move forward.” ARMSTEAD RETURNS: Junior defensive lineman Arik Armstead was back in the starting lineup Saturday after missing the Ducks last game against UCLA and the second half of the loss to Arizona after injuring his ankle right before halftime. The 6-foot-8, 290-pound Armstead had one sack, four tackles for a loss and a team-high four quarterback hurries coming into the game and didn’t make a tackle against Washington. NEW STARS EMERGE: The Ducks got production on Saturday from a handful of players who don’t always show up on the stat sheet. Freshman receiver Darren Carrington had season highs of five catches for 79 yards and junior linebacker Christian French had a career-high two sacks. Tight end Pharaoh Brown backed up his breakout performance against UCLA a week ago with another nice game against the Huskies. The junior had three catches for 99 yards, including a 66-yard catch and run in the second quarter. “Nothing has really changed,” Brown said. “I come out every week, work hard and do what I do. I can’t control where the ball goes during the game, but in my mind I know that every time I get it I want to catch it, run with it, and make plays.” NOTES: Saturday’s attendance was 57,858 for the 101st consecutive sellout at Autzen Stadium. … The 1989 Independence Bowl team, in town to celebrate its 25th anniversary, was honored on the field between the first and second quarters. A handful of former players hoisted coach Rich Brooks into the air to raucous applause from the capacity crowd. … Also in attendance were some ex-players now in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, who have a bye this weekend. Among that group were linebacker Casey Matthews, receivers Jeff Maehl and Will Murphy and coaches Michael Clay (defensive quality control) and Bill Musgrave (quarterbacks).
