Mary Davis Schlotter MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 9, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Sep. 9, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News Mary Davis Schlotter passed away peacefully in her home in the arms of her loved ones September 3, 2014. Mary had fought a long, inspiring battle with pulmonary fibrosis and had received a lung transplant at Duke University August 17, 2011. Whether you were a friend, a colleague, a child she taught to read, or simply someone she crossed paths with in Lithia Park, Mary always brought joy into your day. She had an incredible curiosity for life, and a kindness and wisdom that brought out the best in everyone who knew her. Mary was born October 18, 1938 in Bangor, Maine to the late Thomas and Katherine Davis. The third of five children, she grew up in the same century-old farmhouse where her father had been born. Mary graduated from John Bapst High School in 1956, where she made many lifelong friends. At the University of Maine, she majored in history and met forestry student John (Jack) Schlotter, whom she would marry April 29, 1961. Jack's role as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army took them to Stuttgart, Germany, where their daughters Katherine and Ellen were born. The family loved living in Germany, where they made many friends. They moved to the Northwest in 1964, and eventually to Medford in 1975, where Mary taught school for more than twenty years. She also earned master's degrees in history and reading at Southern Oregon University. The whole family enjoyed their lives in Medford. While at Hedrick Jr. High and Jackson and Roosevelt Elementary Schools, Mary taught hundreds of children to read and provided a lasting encouragement that many carry with them to this day. One of her favorite activities as a teacher was working with many student teachers, all of whom appreciated her guidance and support. Friends remember Mary for her countless acts of kindness and her warm, compassionate intelligence and humor. She always took a selfless interest in others. Mary adored her grandchildren. She also loved discussing a good book, reading the New York Times, taking a brisk walk in the park, and relishing the humor of Steven Colbert. Mary was grateful for the extra years she received from her lung transplant. Even in her final days, she maintained her youthful spirit and gratitude for life, and her warm, beautiful smile comforted everyone around her. She leaves behind her husband of 53 years, Jack; her daughters, Katherine Witteman (husband, Michael) of Portland, Ore. and Ellen Schlotter of Eugene, Ore.; her granddaughters, Julia and Katie Witteman, of Portland; her brother, Thomas Davis, of Veazie, Maine; her sisters, Anne Chadbourne of Fullerton, Calif., Ellen Birlem of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and Katherine Wiesendanger of Richmond, Va., and many nieces and nephews. All love and miss her beyond words. At Mary's request no service is planned. She would wish only that you do something kind or helpful for someone and that you enjoy the gift of each day.
