Despite the slogan, it turns out one game on the 2013 schedule was actually circled in Cardinal red throughout the season. And not just by Duck fans and the media. Offensive coordinator Scott Frost said after Monday’s practice that Oregon overemphasized beating Stanford. “I think one mistake we might have made last year was putting a little too much focus on this game. We had the game, in my mind, it was circled at the beginning of the year,” Frost said. “I think a lot of players had it circled in their minds at the beginning of the year, and we didn’t play our best.” The Cardinal defeated the Ducks 26-20 last November to dash the program’s national title dreams for the second consecutive season. Stanford ran the ball 66 times for 274 yards, including 45 carries for 157 yards by Tyler Gaffney, while possessing the ball for 42 minutes, 34 seconds. Oregon’s high-scoring offense was shut out for three quarters, lost two fumbles and finished 1-for-3 in the red zone. Marcus Mariota, who was playing on a partially torn MCL, completed 20 of 34 passes for 250 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns. After an 8-0 start, Mark Helfrich’s first Oregon team finished the regular season 10-2 before accepting an invitation to the Alamo Bowl. Stanford parlayed winning the head-to-head tiebreaker in the North Division into a second consecutive Pac-12 championship before losing to Michigan State in the Rose Bowl. The fifth-ranked Ducks (7-1, 4-1) host the Cardinal (5-3, 3-2) again on Saturday at Autzen Stadium (4:30 p.m., Fox). “I think we just played a little tight,” Frost said. “I think maybe Stanford might have, too. Both teams going into last year were probably looking forward to that game as the one you had to win. As good as the Pac-12 is and as good as every team in our league is, we can’t afford to do that. “Our team has done a great job of focusing on every team that we play. I haven’t heard anything about this team going into last week or the rest of the season.” This year’s matchup will be headlined by a healthier Mariota leading the nation’s fifth-ranked scoring offense (45.5 ppg) against Stanford’s stout defense, which leads the conference in scoring defense (12.5 ppg). On the flip side, the Cardinal offense had struggled throughout the season, until last Saturday’s 38-14 victory over Oregon State, when Stanford went away from its power game and allowed Kevin Hogan to get the ball to his skill players in more of an Oregon-like spread attack. “I don’t think it’s a negative,” Hogan told reporters of changing the offensive formula that made Stanford unique in a pass-heavy conference. “Hopefully, it adds a dimension that can open up the power hole when we want to execute our run plays.” Don Pellum’s defense, currently ranked 106th nationally in yards allowed (462.4 ypg), has been the weak link for Oregon. The Ducks gave up 560 yards during the 59-41 victory over California at Levi’s Stadium. “I’m not really too worried about what other people say,” said cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, who noted that Oregon’s defense is usually on the field longer and faces more snaps than most units due to the quick-strike nature of the Mariota-led offense. “They’re not really playing, they just want to look at the stats after the game. You watch the film, we definitely have to get better. But at the same time, I think we’re doing some great things.” Asked during the media day event in July about the conference’s best rivalry since the expansion to 12 teams, Stanford’s players shied away from looking ahead to another showdown with Oregon. “The North title has come down to that game, so obviously it means a little bit more then. But every game is just as important,” senior strong safety Jordan Richards said. “You lose to Oregon State, then playing Oregon doesn’t have as much significance. We’re not looking past anybody. We learned that the hard way last year. This year it’s on the leaders of this team to make sure we don’t skip past anybody.” Despite losing three games, Stanford can still win the North Division and keep its three-peat hopes alive with another victory over the Ducks. Oregon can remain in contention for the College Football Playoff with a victory. “The key to having success this week is just playing well.
