The Pirates (3-4) won a pair of five-inning games, 12-2 and 18-7. Phoenix’s No. 2 hitter, Thomas Skaff, collected five hits and nine RBIs in the twin bill to pace the Pirate offense against the winless Challengers (0-8). “We really hit the baseball well today,” said Phoenix coach Bill Hutchison, whose team banged out 28 hits. “We found the gaps all day long.” In Game 2, Martinez (1-0) pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief and struck out four to pick up his first decision of the season. “(Martinez) was unhittable,” said Hutchison. “He threw a ton of strikes and pounded the zone really well.” Colton Beer went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game. Garrett Truex, Chase Courtney and Brennen Watts each had two hits and two RBIs in the nightcap Phoenix pitcher Drake Knowles went the distance in the opener in his first start after returning from a back injury. Kyle Botermans added three hits and three RBIs for the Pirates, and Dorian Mobley chipped in two hits and two RBIs. Softball CASCADE CHRISTIAN 4, PHOENIX 3, 8 inn.: At Talent, Cascade Christian sophomore pitcher Shaylee Ledesma went the distance on the mound and scored the winning run in the nonconference game at Hagler-James Park. Ledesma opened the eighth inning with a double and came around to score on an error. Ledesma had two hits and scored twice for the Challengers (4-1). Phoenix (0-5) received two hits apiece from Tiona Hurd, Amber Wolfe, Brook Kentner and Kendra Hall. Boys Golf RAVEN RUMBLE: At Redmond, Crater’s Mike Piazzini tied for 11th and the Comets finished last in the 14-school field at Eagle Crest Resort. Piazzini fired a 7-over par 79 on the Ridge Course. The Comets tallied a 396 team total. Pendleton’s Reilly Hegarty registered a 70 for the low individual score, and Summit of Bend won the team competition with a 298. Girls Golf RIDGEVIEW INVITATIONAL: At Redmond, Crater senior Daniele Giles tied for medalist honors and the Comets placed fourth out of 15 teams at Eagle Crest Resort. Giles shot a 1-under 71 to tie Haley Greb of Pendleton. Crater’s McKenna Saunders and Falon Sonnen both carded 98 (24th) and Savannah Perkins finished 59th with a 117. Summit of Bend won the team event with a 312. The Comets shot a 384.
