Maddison Thivierge: Athlete of the week MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 30, 2005 at 2:00 AM Updated Dec 18, 2010 at 4:40 PM Posted Sep. 30, 2005 at 2:00 AM Updated Dec 18, 2010 at 4:40 PM » Social News Ashland's volleyball team made a statement in winning the Rogue Valley Classic last weekend, and so, too, did middle blocker Maddison Thivierge. While the second-ranked Grizzlies solidified the notion they're a state-title contender, Thivierge showed she's a preeminent players. With the junior Thivierge leading the way, Ashland defeated No. 4 Gresham 23-25, 25-16, 15-8 for the championship. It was the Grizzlies' first win in the event in 18 years. In the title match, the 5-foot-11 Thivierge hit an astronomical .889, with 16 kills on 18 swings and only one error. In the six-match tourney, she had 45 kills, six errors and 26 blocks. She has great size, she jumps really well and she has really long arms, says Ashland coach Josh Rohlfing. She takes up a lot the court. She's exceptionally quick, probably the quickest middle I've seen in the state in years. She flies around the court and consistently makes plays. The 24-team tourney included most of the state's top teams. She was solid at the net, and our defense became that much better because of it, says Rohlfing, adding that despite the high level of competition, she made those hitters change what they were trying to do and what their goals were. That was pretty fantastic. Thivierge followed up on Tuesday with another solid outing as Ashland swept Eagle Point in Southern Oregon Conference play, 25-19, 25-15, 25-12. She had 17 kills on 23 swings with four errors. She added four blocks.
