North wins R.V. Classic for the first time It took North Medford 13 years to win its first Rogue Valley Classic volleyball tournament championship. The sixth-ranked Black Tornado made it two in three years Saturday and avenged a state playoff loss in the process, defeating North Bend, 15-6, 15-4 in the finals at North Medford. The Bulldogs knocked North out of the playoffs last year, but didn�t have the firepower this time. Kendra Mitchell rung-up eight kills and two blocks against the Bulldogs, while Kara Hwang added four kills and two blocks, Candace Fleener four kills and a block and Chaley Higgins added four blocks. "Obviously, I was really pleased with our balance," said North coach Ron Beick, whose team won 12 of the 13 games it played in pool and bracket play. North�s first big test came in the quarterfinals against Southern Oregon Conference rival Roseburg as the Tornado won 15-3, 7-15, 15-10. "Our main goal was to play with the same intensity and consistency throughout the day," Beick said. "With the exception of the middle of the Roseburg match, when they ran off six straight points, we did." Mitchell and Hwang had eight kills apiece and Jill Carrigan six more against the Indians. North then ousted South Medford in the semifinals, 15-4, 15-5, while North Bend knocked off Marshfield, 15-13, 15-6. Crystal Glover twice tallied 10 kills, including her effort in a 15-11, 15-12 quarterfinal win over Crater. St. Mary�s, the No. 3-ranked Class 2A team in the state, was in a pool with Crater, North Bend and South Medford and emerged No. 1. The Crusaders (10-3) beat Wilson, 15-11, 15-13 in the first round of bracket play before losing to North Bend, 15-1, 13-15, 15-12. St. Mary�s coach James Joy said Lani Brophy set well, Kim Hansen provided punch on the right side and Kristen Zielony was able to convert on a lot of quick sets. "We figured we�d be third or fourth in our pool," Joy said. "To finish first in our pool and win our first-round match was amazing. It will build confidence." BUTTE FALLS 15-15, HOSANNA 1-2 � At Klamath Falls, Butte Falls improved to 2-0 in Skyline A Southern Division play at Henley Middle School. The Loggers (3-2) notched nine aces, including six by junior Jessica Dunlap, who served the first nine points in the first game. Jammie McClanahan had six kills in 10 attacks, while Dunlap had seven assists. PROSPECT 15-15, TRIAD 4-5 � At Prospect, Lindsay Acre and Sarah Gordon sparked Prospect (2-2, 1-1 Sky A) to its first Skyline A League South Division victory. Acre was 8 of 9 serving with three kills and Gordon produced a 10-for-10 serving effort. Gordon added four kills. Football MAZAMA JV 34, ST. MARY�S 6 � Derek Philips caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jason Caplan for St. Mary�s only score in the non-league game at Spiegelberg Stadium. Freshman Jeff Wilkinson provided a highlight for the Crusaders (0-3) with a 56-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter. Caplan completed six passes on 15 attempts for 55 yards and had two interceptions. Tyler Stout came up with four receptions good for 36 yards. Quarterback Kyle Blank passed for touchdowns of 3, 28 and 51 yards to Matt Teeples as Mazama totalled 471 yards in offense. St. Mary�s is off next week, then open�s the Southern Cascade League against local rival Cascade Christian on Oct. 6. Coolidge broke the record of 16:41 set by former Riddle runner Jorge Gonzales in 1997. The Crusaders fielded the only complete boys team and had the only four girl runners. Lupe Sanchez of Glendale was second in the boys race, almost three minutes behind Coolidge. St. Mary�s Ben Tribelhorn finished third at 19:39 and in doing so broke the 20-minute mark for the first time in a 5K. Leah Sawyer was victorious among the St. Mary�s girls runners.
