The couple moved into an apartment last month with their 2½-year-old daughter but still lack most household goods and furnishings. The father, 31, recently obtained full-time employment but spent all the family’s savings on the deposit and first month’s rent for their new apartment. Emergency food boxes have kept them from going hungry. The family’s cupboards are bare of nearly all kitchen utensils, dishes, pots, pans and appliances. The apartment also is devoid of beds, bedding, dressers and towels. The couple would appreciate a vacuum cleaner and washer and dryer. Clothing is a need for the entire family. The little girl wears size 3T clothes and size 6 shoes. Recently enrolled in speech services, the toddler is thriving despite her family’s hardships, said her care coordinator with Medford’s Family Nurturing Center. Drug-free for a year, the parents moved to Medford from the Portland area to enter addiction-recovery programs. The mother, 24, stayed for seven months in OnTrack’s residential Home Program with her daughter. After leaving a Portland treatment facility, the father traveled by bus to Medford and lived for two months at the Gospel Mission before he was approved for OnTrack’s residential program. Although they receive outreach services from the Family Nurturing Center, the couple feel bad about asking for any additional help and rarely does, said the center’s staff.
