Garrett, M.D. passed from earth to an eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ Thursday, June 25, 2015. He was born August 16, 1926 on the family farm in Franklin County, Nebraska to his parents, Bird Garrett and Myrtle J (Baumgardner) Garrett. He was one of five children. He spent the first 14 years of his life in Nebraska. In 1940 he moved with his parents and two grandparents to Lemon Grove, California to join his four siblings. After graduating from Grossmont Union High School, La Mesa, California in 1943, he served two years of active duty in the U.S. Navy. After the war he attended San Diego State College, graduating in 1949, following which he attended Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis , Missouri, graduating with the M.D. degree in 1953. He joined the United States Air Force during his senior year in Medical School. After completing a one-year rotating internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. in June 1954, he was stationed at Laon, Air Force Base, France for one year before being transferred to Wiesbaden, Germany to serve at the 7100th USAF hospital for two years. After being discharged from the Air Force, he attended a residency program in Radiology at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, California from 1957 to 1959. He then joined a Radiology practice in San Mateo, California, known as Benninghoven and Linck, where he practiced radiology for the next 20 years, serving as the Chief of the Radiology Department and Chief of Staff at Chope General Hospital in San Mateo, Calif. In 1979 he retired from that practice and moved to Reno, Nevada, where he practiced radiology as a flying doctor in rural hospitals in Nevada and Northern California. He had a 30-year secondary career with the United States military, beginning when he served two years with the U.S. Navy in World War II as a Hospital Corpsman. He joined the Air Force in 1953 and served four years on active duty. In 1962 he joined the Air Force Reserve and served until retiring in 1986. During that time he became a Flight Surgeon and held positions of significant responsibility, including being the Command Surgeon for the 4th Air Force, and eventually serving in the Air Force Surgeon General’s office in Washington D.C., where he attained the rank of Brigadier General.He enjoyed an outdoor l ife with hiking, hunting, fishing, scuba diving, and skiing. One of his greatest passions was flying, and during his life flew over 3000 hours.After retiring from active radiology practice in 1994 he moved with his wife, Jeanne to a new home in Auburn, California, before finally moving to the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Oregon in 2005. He married Patricia Massey in 1945. They had three daughters, Janet, Yvonne, and Virginia before being divorced. He married Jeanne Price in 1972, with whom he lived for 36 years until she passed away. He married Cecile Camden in 2008, with whom he has lived happily until the present time.He is survived by his wife, Cecile; three biological children, Janet L. Rushton (Michael), Yvonne M. Garrett (Jeffrey Meith), and Virgina K. Kime (Nicholas); four stepdaughters, Debora Tocher (David), Candace Perry, Cheryl Smith (Michael), and Linda Smith (Bradley); one stepson, Brad Camden (Jamie); and 15 grandchildren. A military interment service for family will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2000 Oakdale Drive, Medford. He will be forever loved and missed by all who knew him.
