Central Point recall vote nears end Almost half of all Central Point voters have returned their ballots in the election to recall the town's mayor and two council members. Voters have until Tuesday at 8 p.m. to return their mail ballots. But elections officials urge voters who have not mailed those ballots before today not to mail them, but to drop them off in person at the courthouse. Ballots can be dropped off any time at the payment drop center at the Jackson County Courthouse annex, 10 S. Oakdale. They also can be taken to the elections office at the courthouse between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday and between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday. Mayor Bill Walton and council members Dave Gilmour and Donna Higginbotham were targeted for recall in an effort spearheaded by Central Point restaurant owner Larry Thornton. Thornton opposed the three officials' support of a January anti-smoking ordinance that banned smoking in restaurants and most non-residential buildings. The law also imposed stiff penalties on stores that sell tobacco to minors. Of 6,626 voters, 3,059 -- or 48 percent -- had returned their ballots as of Thursday night, county elections officials reported.
