LAW ENFORCEMENT Neighbors witness injured women screaming for help in White City shooting Comment By Damian Mann Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 7, 2015 at 9:55 AM Updated Aug 7, 2015 at 9:07 PM By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 7, 2015 at 9:55 AM Updated Aug 7, 2015 at 9:07 PM » Social News A drive-by shooting in the 2500 block of Antelope Road in White City left two women injured and screaming Friday morning, according to neighbors who think the attack was gang-related. One couple saw the injured women stumbling and bleeding in their front yard, and then one of the victims started screaming for help while the other woman began praying in Spanish. The couple, like many others in the neighborhood, didn’t want their names revealed for fear of retribution. They said one of the injured women was bleeding from her head, and both injured women had wounds in their legs. Sheriff’s deputies have not yet confirmed any details, but said two adult women were transported to local hospitals for treatment for gunshot wounds and are listed in "stable" condition. Neighbors described anywhere from two to six shots being fired at around 5:30 a.m. between Division Road and Gladstone Avenue. Some neighbors said three women were shot at, but one managed to dive into some nearby bushes while her attacker tried to shoot her. The bullet missed and ended up lodged in a wooden fence. “I heard around five or six shots,” said Jared Lee Swindell, 26, who lives nearby. “I almost didn’t think they were gunshots at first. Pretty crazy.” Deputies shut down Antelope Road between Division and Gladstone for most of the morning while investigators combed the area looking for bullet casings and other evidence. Investigators with metal detectors searched through bushes and yards. According to painted areas outlined at the scene, the shooting appeared to take place while the women were on the sidewalk. A phone and purse were found about 10 feet down a driveway. Two painted areas appeared to outline areas of blood stains on the sidewalk. Most neighbors said they thought the drive-by was gang-related, although that hasn't been confirmed by the sheriff's department yet. Linda Roberts lives a few doors down from the shooting. “I woke up and thought I heard somebody knocking at the door,” the 68-year-old said. “I heard crying coming from somewhere, so I went out into the backyard. I heard another knock at the front door, and there was all these cops outside. ‘What the heck,’ I said.” Roberts, who didn't hear the shots Friday morning, said White City has had a few drive-by shootings, but not on her street. Like other neighbors, Roberts said she heard that the shooters threw something out of their car into the bushes, and deputies were looking for the object. Roberts said she hopes to get some clearer answers about what took place from deputies. “Why would two women be walking down the street at 5:30 a.m.?” she said. Curt Sather, a father of eight, said the neighborhood is typically fairly quiet and children have a curfew from midnight to 4 a.m. Despite the violence, Sather said he thinks the gang-related drive-bys are usually directed at a known target. “It really doesn’t concern me,” he said. “For the most part, these guys know who they’re going after. We know we’re safe. It’s not us they’re after.”  Detectives are searching for a newer-looking, midsized, white, single-cab Dodge pickup with tinted windows in connection with the shooting. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 541-774-6800.   By Damian Mann Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 7, 2015 at 9:55 AM Updated Aug 7, 2015 at 9:07 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
