Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 16, 2005 Bicyclist critical after accident South Medford High School student collided with the bicyclist, 18, in front of a noontime crowd of kids By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A South Medford High School lunch hour was shattered Thursday after a student stuck a bicyclist with her car, sending him to the hospital with critical injuries, police said. Dozens of students witnessed the accident, which occurred at the Minute Market at J Street and Oakdale Avenue, a busy area during the school’s lunch break, Medford police Detective Sgt. Tim Doney said. Witnesses told police that Medford resident Joel Jeffery Summerhays, 18, of the 100 block of West Second Street, was riding his bicycle down J Street when he allegedly crossed into the path of a car driven by a 17-year-old South Medford High School student heading the opposite direction, Doney said. Summerhays was pitched from the bicycle and struck the car’s windshield, shattering it, Doney said. Doney, who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident, said Summerhays suffered visible fractures in his arms and legs, as well as what looked to be severe head injuries. He was taken by a Mercy Flights ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where he spent the afternoon in surgery. He remained hospitalized in critical condition late Thursday. Advertisement The driver was not cited, Doney said. "At this point, the witnesses indicated she was not speeding," Doney said. "She’s pretty broken up about the whole thing," he added. "It sounds like he may have been traveling in the opposite direction and swerved out in front of her," Doney said. The crash left many students in the area shaken, Doney said.
