Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 19, 2006 %%$$cutline$$%% SOU wrestlers win three regional titles Raider Roundup PRESCOTT, Ariz. — Three Southern Oregon University wrestlers won titles and three others advanced to the finals to help the ninth-ranked Raiders finish as the NAIA Western Regional runner-up Saturday. In what was the closest regional tournament ever, SOU mustered 81 team points at the four-team event, one shy of seventh-ranked Menlo College and one ahead of defending champion and fifth-rated Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. It was a great day for Raider seniors Jimmy Grochowsky and David O’Brien. Shortly after becoming only the third Raider ever to reach the 100-victory plateau with a 3-1 decision over Menlo’s Stephen Towne in the 165-pound semifinals, the top-ranked Grochowsky repeated as a regional champion by topping ERAU’s Calvin DeVault, 12-5. Now 101-44 for his career, Grochowsky, who is from Estacada, was named regional MVP based on his team-best 33-6 season record. Meanwhile, the sixth-ranked and top-seeded O’Brien became the school’s first four-time regional champion by outlasting second-seeded teammate Josh Fitzgerald 3-2 in the 174-pound finale. Advertisement Freshman Trevor Lofstedt claimed SOU’s other crown. The former Roseburg High state champion decisioned Menlo’s Mike Rodriguez 6-4 in the 125-pound championship after Rodriguez shocked top-seeded Richard Byrd of ERAU in the semifinals. Fifth-ranked senior Rick Story picked up his 29th season win but suffered an 11-9 setback to second-ranked Joffre Lander in the star-studded 184-pound title bout. Sophomore Jimmy Ulrey suffered a 9-8 upset loss to Menlo’s Eli Arismendez to finish as the 149-pound runner-up. Freshman Barry Johnson (133), senior James Mannenbach (165) and sophomore Taylor Wilkerson (285) each placed third. Eleventh-year head coach Mike Ritchey shared regional coach-of-the-year honors with Menlo’s Keith Spataro. Women’s Basketball CORBAN 62, SOUTHERN OREGON 55 — At Ashland, Corban College ended Southern Oregon’s quest for a Cascade Conference playoff spot by downing the Raiders at McNeal Pavilion. SOU, which needed to beat the Warriors (24-6, 13-5) in the regular-season finale to have a chance at cracking the eight-team playoff field, finished the year 12-17 overall and 5-13 in the league. Sophomore point guard Chelsey Zimmerman led Southern Oregon with 15 points, while Andi Peterson added 10. The Warriors never trailed, led 33-24 at halftime and held off a second-half Raider rally that cut the margin to five (43-38).
