DUCK NOTES Young receiver enjoys moment after big game Comment By Damin Esper for the Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Damin Esper for the Mail Tribune Posted Dec. 6, 2014 at 12:01 AM By Damin Esper for the Mail Tribune Posted Dec. 6, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Darren Carrington was posing for picture after picture after picture on the field at Levi’s Stadium on Friday night. A member of the Oregon Ducks entourage finally barked at the redshirt freshman, “Hollywood! Get to the locker room!” Hollywood found his way to the locker room. But why not stay on the field for a little bit longer and savor a Pac-12 Conference championship for the Ducks — especially coming by a 51-13 score over Arizona. Carrington finished with seven catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. The highlight catch came in the third quarter when Marcus Mariota avoided no less than three rushers, found room to move to his right and uncorked a leaping 46-yard strike to Carrington, who had slipped behind cornerback Jonathan McKnight. Carrington had to leap over McKnight to make the catch. “I saw him scrambling and just took off,” Carrington said. “He threw it up there. You know, with Marcus, a play is never over. You’ve got to keep it live all of the time. I saw it up there. For Marcus, I just want to do anything. So I just went up and got it and came down with it.” Carrington stayed on the field and caught the touchdown pass on the next play from 11 yards out. That made the score 37-7. STOP UNIT: The Oregon defense was absolutely dominant pretty much all night. Unlike the teams’ first meeting, when the Wildcats piled up 495 yards en route to a 31-24 win at Autzen Stadium, Arizona couldn’t do a thing with the ball. Oregon held the Wildcats to two first downs in the first half and 25 yards from scrimmage. The score was only 23-0 at the break thanks to the Ducks’ offense struggling to finish drives. “Play harder,” linebacker Tony Washington said when asked if the game plan changed on Friday. “That’s the only thing different. We take pride any time we step on the field and that’s something the coaches and the rest of the guys preach. We’ve got to be out there and be greedy and be stingy. That’s all we were trying to do.” Arizona ended up with 224 yards on 61 snaps. The Wildcats finished with 111 yards rushing, but had a net of minus-9 in the first half, thanks in part to three sacks of Anu Solomon. Nick Wilson didn’t do much, rushing for 14 yards on seven carries in the first half. “We didn’t really change up much,” lineman DeForest Buckner said. “We did a little bit with the front and showing some disguises. I think we played really well. We can’t always depend on the offense having to score every time. We have to show up, too. It’s a team sport.” Buckner finished with seven total tackles, including one sack. Washington had five tackles, including a sack and one other tackle for loss. “They played phenomenal,” slot receiver Byron Marshall said. “From the first to the last, they played their hearts out. Just to know that we can have a defense that can play like that, it’s exciting for the whole team.” ROUGH OUTING: Solomon was benched after halftime, in favor of Jesse Scroggins III and then Jerrard Randall. Solomon, a redshirt freshman, completed 6 of 12 passes for 34 yards. Scroggins hit on a 69-yard touchdown to Cayleb Jones, but otherwise struggled, going 3 of 9 for 79 yards with an interception. Randall missed on all five of his pass attempts. WELCOME BACK: Marshall grew up in nearby San Jose, where he was a football and track star at Valley Christian High School. He had a solid performance on Friday, rushing for 31 yards on six carries and catching five passes for 23 yards, although he seemed a tad underwhelmed. “It definitely does,” he said when asked if it meant something special to be home. “To be in front of my family. I had a lot of people come to the game. It was a great feeling.” By Damin Esper for the Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Damin Esper for the Mail Tribune Posted Dec. 6, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
