The Barnstormer's Vintage Fair, described as a "shabby chic yard sale on steroids," will mark its fifth anniversary at The Expo's Seven Feathers Pavilion. Hours are from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, and 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. There'll be more than 80 vendors this year, up from 52 last year, that will offer antiques, home and garden decor, "funky junk" and more. The event was founded in 2012 by Medford mother-daughter pair Cindy Conner and Lindsay McPhail to help cover property taxes and "have some fun," McPhail says. McPhail's family made headlines in 2011 when it was chosen by ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" show for a rebuilding of its ailing home. The vintage fair helps sustain the property and support local businesses and crafters, McPhail says. Formerly named Vintage Fair at Barnstormer Farm, a nod to McPhail's pilot father, McPhail says she never dreamed the event would outgrow her family's farm. Attendance each year outpaced the last, climbing from 3,000 visitors to more than 5,000 last year. While she's watched the event grow and evolve, she says she's still "completely amazed" at each year's growing attendance. "This is only our five-year anniversary and we had no choice but to move to the fairgrounds. Last year, at one point, we only had six parking spots left," she says. "Once you break 3,000 people, it goes to a whole different big ordeal that you have to go through with the county. They were great to work with, but it gets more and more expensive. We were running out of room and we just realized that we either had to quit or we had to find a place that could facilitate this size of a show." With the added vendor space, McPhail and Conner plan to benefit some community charities, including Gamerosity, which provides gaming systems to kids battling cancer, and Hope Equestrian, which provides therapeutic horseback riding to kids with special needs. Gamerosity director and founder Manny Munoz says the event's focus on local vendors and support of nonprofits help create its positive energy and success. Munoz, who sells custom T-shirts and other clothing to fund his organization, was provided a free booth for this year's event. "Our hope is to have a special project to help and empower children fighting cancer, along with their families, throughout the country," Munoz says. Mindy Jones, owner of Pretty in Paint Furniture of Medford, says the new venue would be good for vendors and customers. "We are excited about the move to the fairgrounds. I feel it will be more exposure and more room for us to spread out and have even more vendors," Jones says. "We've done other shows and this is by far our favorite. We love supporting local and driving traffic to our downtown store. There is such diversity at this event it makes it more exciting every year." McPhail and Conner say that while they will miss the atmosphere of the old barn, shopping at their August event will be far more comfortable at The Expo. "Normally, right now, we'd be out in our barnyard in the 100-degree weather getting ready for everyone. The new space will definitely be big enough we won't have limitations on how much we can grow," she McPhail says. "And, ya know, running water and actual bathrooms will be just amazing. We're extremely excited to see where we grow from here." McPhail encourages shoppers to come early for the best selection. Admission is $10 Friday night, which includes re-entry on Saturday, and $7 Saturday, or $5 with an item of nonperishable food to benefit the Table Rock Fellowship food pantry.
