PREP SOFTBALL North routs Glencoe in playoff opener Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 26, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 26, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Grace Jovanovic made a smashing return to the North Medford softball lineup on Monday and, in doing so, allowed the Black Tornado to open the 6A state playoffs with a bang as it secured a 15-5, six-inning win over Glencoe in the first round. After a 2½-week hiatus due to injury — essentially the only time Jovanovic has been out of North’s lineup since she stepped on campus as a freshman — the senior center fielder cranked out three doubles to finish 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs on Monday. “It’s an added spark at the beginning of our lineup having her back because Grace does so many things at the plate,” said Tornado head coach Mike Mayben. “She can get on base and also drive in runs because she adds a lot of power in the gaps for us when she’s up.” Overall, the sixth-seeded Black Tornado (23-4) managed 16 hits to earn its 15th straight victory. North Medford will host McNary, an 11-7 winner over Gresham, at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the second round. Taelor Mayben went 4-for-5 with one run and two RBIs, Rylan Austin drove in three runs, Alex Barry was 2-for-4 with two runs and Olivia Lethlean scored three times to help power the Black Tornado against Glencoe’s three-pitcher setup. North Medford broke the game open with a nine-run fourth inning to go ahead 13-5. A leadoff double by Jovanovic and RBI single by Mayben enacted the 10-run mercy rule in the sixth. Sarah Thomas improved to 17-2 in the complete-game effort. The junior allowed seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Macy Besuyen was 4-for-4 with one run and three RBIs on a bases-clearing triple in the second inning to pace 27th-seeded Glencoe (11-16). GRANTS PASS 4, NEWBERG 0: At Grants Pass, Danielle Taylor’s two-run homer run in the fifth inning led Grants Pass in the first-round game of the 6A state playoffs. The third-seeded Cavers (25-3) next host Roosevelt on Wednesday. Amy Robinson struck out 11, walked two and allowed three hits to earn the victory, while Taylor Thomas was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Nicole Godwin added one RBI. Baseball GRANTS PASS 9, GRESHAM 3: At Gresham, Cody Ekwall allowed one earned run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts to help Grants Pass upend 10th-seeded Gresham (16-11) in the first round of the 6A state playoffs. The 23rd-seeded Cavemen (14-14) struck first with four runs in the third inning courtesy of an RBI double by Easton Bents, RBI walk to Kadin Lopez and two-run single by Anthony Del Toro, who finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Tyler Rund was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Bents 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI for Grants Pass, which next plays at McMinnville on Wednesday.
