Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 25, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 25, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 25, 1915 SISKIYOU HIGHWAY OPEN TO TRAVEL WITHIN A WEEK Engineer Kittredge, in charge of the Pacific highway, over the Siskiyous, was a Medford visitor Tuesday, and states that if no rain falls meanwhile, the Oregon portion of the grade will be fit for travel by he end of the week. In the past three weeks, there has only been three days without rain. All the sides have been removed, and teams are dragging the roadway. The California portion has not yet been touched, and is imassable on account of slides and the collapse of a rubble wall. To hasten operations, Mr. Kittredge met Engineer Bedford at Yreka Saturday, who promised that work would begin in the next week. The rubble wall will be replaced by a concrete wall. So far the Southern Pacific has done nothing towards constructing the subway under the highway, a temporary road around has been constructed and it is a year since the subway was agreed upon, but the railroad insisted on doing it themselves. Engineer Bedford states that the new highway in Shasta and Siskiyou counties, California, eliminates 38 railroad grade crossings, some at the expense of $25,000, and there is but one grade crossing contemplated in the the two counties. GERMANY ASKS WEEKS DELAY TO REPLY TO AMERICA LONDON, May 25 — The following dispatch was received today by the Exchange Telegraph company from Amsterdam: "The German government has asked America for a further delay of a week in its reply to the note concerning the sinking of the Lusitania. In all probability the note will be delivered at Washington on Saturday. "It is stated in Berlin that the note will be couched in very friendly terms. On account of the recent Italian complications, the feeling in Berlin regarding the United States is much more calm. Everything possible will be done to avert trouble. German submarines are to be instructed in accordance with this policy, although the note will explain that on principle Germany cannot openly stop submarine warfare."
