Sixty-year-old Judy Day lay on the living room floor, her hand covering a bullet hole in her chest, police said. The visitor, whom police declined to identify, called paramedics who also called Eagle Point police officer Jim Gray, who found the woman helping press Judy Day’s hand over her wound, authorities said. Gray then looked in the back bedroom to find the bullet-riddled body of Day’s husband, 59-year-old Daniel Clifton Day, the apparent victim of Eagle Point’s first homicide in more than five years, police said. Investigators Monday were able to briefly interview Judy Day at Rogue Valley Medical Center, and Eagle Point police Chief David Strand remained convinced Monday this was a case of violence between husband and wife. Advertisement Daniel Day suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but Strand declined to reveal the number or location of the wounds. "Our person of interest is Judy Day and she’s the only person of interest," Strand said Monday. "I think everything was contained in this house," Strand said. Strand said he knew of no possible motive Monday for what went awry in an otherwise "really quiet" household. Family members, according to Strand, were equally baffled. "They didn’t see this coming, and they didn’t see any problems in the household," Strand said. Neighbors also described the Days as a quiet, keep-to-themselves couple who both worked and had no one else living with them. Thelma Patrick, their next-door neighbor for more than a dozen years, said she occasionally chatted with the Days but knew very little about them. Patrick said she does not recall ever hearing the couple quarrel. "I never heard a sound over there and I heard nothing (Sunday)," Patrick said. An autopsy was conducted Monday evening on Daniel Day, but Strand said he had not yet received the results. Strand said police on Sunday seized one weapon believed to be involved in the shooting, but he declined to identify the gun or say whether police believe any other weapon was used. "We’re really holding tight on (details) until we can really give a good account" of the circumstances, Strand said. Judy Day remained in critical condition Monday in RVMC’s intensive-care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said. No arrests have been made, and officers planned to meet this morning and compare notes on the case, Strand said. Day’s apparent homicide is the first inside Eagle Point city limits since October 1999, when Prospect resident Mark Curtis Fernandez used a garden stone to bludgeon to death his cousin, 20- year-old Jaime Fernandez. Mark Fernandez, who was 26 at the time of the incident, was convicted of murder in 2001. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Jaime Fernandez was killed at his Crystal Drive residence, less than three blocks from where the Days lived.
