The Grants Pass Department of Public Safety and Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon need help in locating convicted felon Elson Danga Schmidt. Schmidt has been identified as a suspect in an incident on Northwest Clark Street in Grants Pass on Oct. 12. Police say Schmidt entered a residence, assaulted the female victim and then attempted to drag her back into the house after she escaped and ran. The Grants Pass police have issued a felony warrant for Schmidt’s arrest on charges of first-degree burglary, menacing, fourth-degree assault, attempted kidnapping and second-degree criminal mischief. The warrant is extraditable from Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho and Nevada. The Oregon State Board of Parole and Probation also has issued a statewide no-bail felony warrant for parole violation. Schmidt’s criminal history includes an arrest and conviction in July 2000 for fourth-degree assault in Josephine County. He was sentenced to 18 months at the Oregon State Penitentiary. Shortly after his release, Schmidt was again arrested and convicted of fourth-degree assault. The second time, he was sentenced to 14 months in prison. He was released in February. Schmidt is described as an Asian or Pacific Islander male adult, 6 feet tall, weighing approximately 180 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Schmidt has the word "Filpino" tattooed on his neck, and a band and dreamcatcher tattooed on his right forearm. He wears contacts, has previously worn a mustache and may have let his hair grow out. The picture shown here, taken March 6, is the most recent image available. Schmidt has many friends and family in the Josephine County area, so law enforcement officials believe he may still be in the vicinity. Crime Stoppers will pay a reward up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in these cases or any unsolved criminal activity. Callers can remain anonymous.
