He went to school at St. Bernard's Episcopal Boarding School in Peapack-Gladstone, N.J. during World War II because his father was in the United States Army in London as an interpreter and his mother was a supervisor in a Wright-Patterson shipyard. After the war the family moved to Lincoln, Ore. Ruedi traveled 23 miles a day for his senior year at Ashland High School. He became interested in theater and played Henry Aldrich in the senior play. He was a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival company for four years between 1950 and 1957.
