Knife-wielding attacker arrested by Rogue River police A Rogue River man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend with a steak knife and menaced police officers. Michael Herman Aubrey, 41, a transient, was charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault and burglary, two counts of menacing, recklessly endangering and resisting arrest. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $2,036,000 bail. He didn't tell police why he allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend. Aubrey broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment in the 700 block of North River Road in Rogue River around 3 p.m. The woman ran out the back door, but Aubrey threw her to the sidewalk and started stabbing her, said Rogue River police officer Roger Bigham. The victim wrestled the knife from Aubrey, and threw it away, Bigham said. Aubrey then started choking her, yelling "I'm going to kill you" and tried to gouge out her eyeballs with his thumbs, Bigham said. When neighbors heard the woman's screams, Aubrey reportedly ran away. Police found the bloodied man hiding behind a pickup truck several blocks away. He yelled at officers to kill him and tried to reach for something concealed around his waist, Bigham said. Officers drew their guns, and Aubrey lunged at Chief Ken Lewis and grabbed the barrel of his firearm. Lewis and Bigham subdued Aubrey with pepper spray and discovered that he had a black fanny pack under his shirt, which had looked like a weapon, Bigham said. The victim had several slashes on her hands, arms and chest but refused an ambulance. Aubrey received nine stitches for a cut on his hand.
