Former Medford Mayor Al Densmore, who served in the Oregon House with Frohnmayer in the mid-1970s, said it was a pleasure to work with him. “He was just a class act in everything he did and the way he treated everyone," Densmore said. "This one really hurts. He would have been a great governor, even though we were not of the same party. As far as Dave was concerned, party mattered less than the state.” Frohnmayer died Monday at the age of 74. Leigh Johnson of Medford, who also served in the House with Frohnmayer, said he, too, thought Frohnmayer was a "class act" and would've been a great governor. “I thought the world of him. ... He was sincere in his beliefs, objective in his listening and considerate in developing solutions that represented all the people he served.” Frohnmayer was a moderate, not invested in partisan solutions, said Johnson, who worked on Frohnmayer’s campaign for governor. Jack Day, the founder of RoxyAnn Winery, grew up with Frohnmayer and his siblings. Their parents were good social friends, he said, noting that both he and Frohnmayer went to Harvard University after graduating from Medford Senior High School. “He was very bright and a caring type of person, as I recall 60 years later,” said Day. “We two families would do a lot of dinners together. His dad (the late Otto Frohnmayer) was a brilliant attorney, respected by everyone in the community. I’m talking from when I was in diapers on to high school days, being around the Frohnmayers. I was not surprised at all that he went on to become famous (as attorney general and University of Oregon president).
