Wortel, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Estacada, amassed a match-high 20 kills and made numerous clutch plays to lead the second-place Raiders (13-5, 11-2 Cascade Conference) past the sixth-place Knights (8-9, 6-6), 30-27, 30-22, 30-27. Wortel keyed Southern Oregon's fifth consecutive home-court win and 20th straight over the Portland school since 1987 with six consecutive service points to help the Raiders dig out of a 24-20 hole in Game 1. She then added eight kills, six digs and five more service points in the second stanza during which SOU stormed to a 24-14 lead and weathered an 8-1 Knight spurt by scoring the final five points. After a 10-minute break to honor former Raider volleyball mentor Joanne Widness and two dozen of her players, SOU cruised to a 17-9 advantage in Game 3. WPC chipped away, forced a pair of SOU timeouts in a last-ditch comeback bid and pulled within two (29-27) before a tip from junior middle hitter Richelle Millsap closed out the fray. Millsap finished with 14 kills, while sophomore defensive stalwarts Emily Stone and Katie Pluchos collected 23 and 19 digs, respectively. Advertisement As a team, SOU connected at a healthy .230 offensive pace (with junior setter Molly Grossmann leading the way with 33 assists), and the Raiders finished with a 61-37 kill advantage. Senior all-star Michelle Allen led the Knights with 12 kills along with 12 digs, while former Raider setter Marcy Oakland had seven kills, 11 digs and two blocks. The win allowed SOU to maintain its firm grasp on second place in the conference standings (with five regular-season matches remaining), which would net a quarterfinal bye in the league postseason tournament. The Raiders return to action next Friday at home against rival Oregon Tech. Match time is 7 p.m. Soccer CORBAN COLLEGE 2, SOUTHERN OREGON 1 (2OT) — At Ashland, Jessica Matthews connected on the game-winning penalty kick in the second overtime to lift Corban to the victory. Meagan Waunch added Corban's other goal in the 12th minute of action. Southern Oregon tied the game in the 84th minute when Nicole Vilarino was fouled in the box and Judi Dietz converted the penalty kick to send the contest into overtime.
