Comets miss chance to seize tie for first place ROSEBURG -- The Crater baseball team missed a big opportunity to pull even with North Medford for the top spot in the Southern Oregon Conference Saturday. With the Black Tornado suffering its first SOC loss of the season at the hands of Eagle Point, the second-ranked Comets' Casey Campbell soaked up his first defeat, a 4-3 decision to Roseburg in the opening game of a doubleheader. Crater pulled out a 3-2 win in Game 2. The Indians managed only four hits off Campbell but bunched together three runs in the first inning. Ole Sheldon and Matt Liston drew two-out, back-to-back walks and scored on a double by Kevin Linderman. Roseburg added the final run of the inning on an RBI single by David Powell. Mike McInerney picked up his fifth win against one loss for the Indians and benefitted from a rally-killing defensive play by Sheldon at shortstop. Trailing by a run in the fifth, Ken Strate doubled to start things off for Crater. He was doubled off second one batter later when Sheldon snared a line-drive off the bat of P.J. Pardee and whipped the ball to second for the double play. "Mike (McInerney) pitched very well for us," Roseburg coach Ron Goodell said. "He mixed up his pitches and kept them off balance a little bit. A couple of times they hit the ball hard but we made a couple of good defensive plays." Strate led the Comets with two hits while Linderman went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Roseburg. Brent Foster brought Crater back in Game 2 by holding the Indians to two runs while picking up two of the three team hits himself. Foster started things off with a first-inning homer off John Zumwalt. He scored the second Comets' run in the fourth after doubling to start the inning and scoring on an RBI groundout. Roseburg got to Foster for six hits but managed just the two runs. "We weren't able to bunch any hits together," said Goodell. "John (Zumwalt) threw a good game for us, I'm just sorry we couldn't get a little more offense." Crater dropped to 10-2 in SOC play while Roseburg remained tied with Eagle Point for third at 7-5. Softball NORTH MEDFORD 5-12, EAGLE POINT 0-0 -- At Eagle Point, freshman pitcher Keri Sevano's perfect game in the nightcap completed a double no-hitter for seventh-ranked North Medford (19-4, 12-0 SOC). Junior Steph Coe fired a no-hitter against Eagle Point (4-15, 0-12 SOC) in the opener. Coe struck out four and walked two. The Eagles had three players reach base and one runner -- Cassie Dodenhoff -- got as far as third. Dodenhoff hit a line-drive, one-hopper to center field to open the game, but Sandy Horn threw out the junior infielder. North junior Haley Varley had two hits, including a two-run double in the fourth. Sevano struck out nine of the 15 batters she faced and needed only 60 pitches in the second game. Only two balls were hit out of the infield. GRANTS PASS 2-10, SOUTH MEDFORD 1-3 -- Samantha Marrs picked up the wins in both games of a Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader sweep for Grants Pass over host South Medford. Lindsey McHenry led the Panthers (3-19, 1-11 SOC) in the opener with two hits while Gabby Rathburn and Brin Tamblin each went 2-for-3 for the Cavers. Tamblin also had three hits in the nightcap while teammates Alayna Petersen, Seanna Doyel and Ashley Bellum each had two hits. ASHLAND 10-16, KLAMATH UNION 3-0 -- At Klamath Falls, hard-hitting Ashland easily swept the Pelicans Friday, led by the hitting of Amy Williams. Williams was 7-for-9 in the doubleheader, including two doubles and two triples. The senior first baseman scored seven runs and had three RBIs on the day. Ashland's Stephanie Hargis had a big day as well, going 5-for-7 with a triple in each game.
