It was considering a 15-acre site in the Northgate Centre Marketplace next to Trader Joe's but put that idea on the back burner after Medford planners and the public expressed concerns about potential traffic problems. We asked our readers on Facebook for their ideas on where to put a new Costco: Stephanie Berry: I don't care where you put it, but could you pretty please design it with a parking lot that DOESN'T make me fear for my life each and every time I visit? That would be fantastic, thanks. Maureen Soar:  Corner of Highland/Garfield and Hwy 99. Good freeway access. The site near Trader Joe's can work IF the entrance to Costco and the entrance to TJ are separated (so that Costco-bound traffic doesn't use that badly-designed entrance and parking lot). I think the city Planning Commission is sort of smarting over how vociferously people complain about that TJ lot, and the only lame excuse they can make is that "it meets code." Yes, well, if that parking lot meets code, then code is apparently inadequate, isn't it? Shawn Rene S : They could just move a couple blocks away in that big open field behind the car lots. I understand that they want a larger store, and more parking. Then they would still be easily accessible to Medford, WC, EP and Shady Cove. Vanessa Martynse Houk : How about in the biggest empty car lot in the middle of downtown Medford? There's a parking garage nearby and "The Commons," which we all ought to be using, so that would be good. Dina Luttrell Rudesheim : Across from Sonic on E Pine St in Central Point. Right at the interchange, plenty of land. But I liked the original idea. There are plenty of access points and I think people are all wound up because they think the parking lot would be like Trader Joe's. You know they won't do that. Brad Foster : At the Northgate — on the north side of the highway from TJ/REI/etc. It's a better location for Costco than directly behind the plaza. However, It needs a good plan for parking lot entrance/exit as well as gas station. The gas station that will go up there will be VERY crowded because what other gas stations are there at that North Medford interchange? Only Fred Meyer, Spirit? Daang. Janet Patzer Fristoe : I have always felt that the former location of the Hungry Woodsman would be a great location for Costco or Wal Mart. Entry could be put further away from that busy intersection i.e. Sage Rd or west on 238. Amanda Dyer : I still think they should have two of them in Medford. There's enough population to successfully run and operate 2 stores. And plus that will promote more jobs Leigh Ryder Leaming : NOT across from Trader Joe's. With 2 new burger joints about to open at mall intersection with TJs, traffic will be total mayhem, especially during holidays. Susie Mathes Getz : How about moving to Grants Pass? Erica Niquette : Table Bock and Biddle I think it's called. There is a huge empty lot. Debbie Withey : In that huge lot on Hwy 99 where the old Hungry Woodsman used to be. Across from Natural Grocers! Laura Steely Braucht : North Gate area will be a HUGE Nightmare after the burger joints are built. !!! How about near where Costco currently is located, but many more parking stalls!! Even Central Point's exit 33 is a good idea. Best to keep near Crater Lake Hwy, tho, for all the rural customers! Jereme Dittmer : I'd put it at the end of Center Drive to the south. That property is an eyesore. Carman Acosta-De Los Santos : Somewhere near the new Phoenix interchange. They ripped out all the orchards around there, they need to put something on all that bare land. Ronda Moffit: Keep it close to where its at!! Purchase one of the largest fields headed further down Lear Way (the back side of current Costco) towards Coker Butte Rd!! Lots of room for an even larger Costco than what was proposed and a well needed larger parking lot!! Much less congestion in that area than current location or Trader Joe's location.
