"They lost everything," said Jeff Gorman, chief of the Butte Falls Volunteer Fire Department. No one living in the home or three dogs that were inside when the blaze erupted were injured, Gorman said. The call came in at 6:07 p.m. and firefighters were on scene four minutes later, he said. The home, which is owned by Kenneth Myers, according to Jackson County property records, is a total loss, Gorman said. It was built in 1910 and was one of the oldest homes in town, Gorman said. Myers lived in the home with another family, including a pair students who attend school in Butte Falls, said Dianne Gorman, principle for the Butte Falls School District. Donations for the fire victims are being accepted at The Landing building, 801 Laurel Ave., Butte Falls, she said. Gorman said his fire department responded to the blaze full force, with a 1,000-gallon fire engine, a 2,500-gallon water tender and three small fire engines with a total of eight firefighters. Jackson County Fire District No. 4 and the Oregon Department of Forestry also responded. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Gorman said. Because no one witnessed the ignition, which took place in the back of the home, all possibilities are being considered, including arson. Gorman said the home did not have properly working smoke alarms, and stressed that sooner warning of the fire may have saved the home. Reach reporter Sam Wheeler at 541-776-4471 or [email protected].
