Raider roundup Escobar wins Belcastro Open crown ASHLAND -- Southern Oregon sophomore Ryan Escobar won the 125-pound championship to highlight the Raiders' performance in the Saturday's Pete Belcastro Open at McNeal Pavilion. Escobar scored a superior decision over Shawn Williams of Northern Idaho Community College in the finals. Escobar topped K.C. Rock of Boise State, 15-4, in the semifinals and decisioned San Francisco State's Max Schurkamp in the quarterfinals. The returning letterman, who wrestled at 118 pounds last season, started the day with a default victory over Southwestern Oregon Community College' Jason Chao. A total of 36 Raiders saw action in the open meet that allows redshirt wrestlers to compete with varsity regulars. SOU senior Matt Armstrong shook off a 5-2 setback to Oregon Sean Morgan in the 165-pound semifinals to take third place, edging Oregon State's Nathan Coy, 2-0. Armstrong beat Quinn Collett of Portland State, 10-5, in the quarterfinals. He also topped OSU's Jake Huffman, 19-10, and Pacific Lutheran's Nick Bliss, 8-0. Fourth-year coach Mike Ritchey was pleasantly surprised by freshman Chris Huntley of Coquille, who won three of five matches. The bad news for Southern Oregon was the potential loss of all-American senior 141-pounder Chris Bettineski, who suffered a right-shoulder injury. Bettineski won three matches, including a 15-7 victory over Oregon's Tony Overstake, 15-7, in the quarterfinals. Bettineski's day ended by injury default to Oregon's David Watson in the semis. Ritchey said former Eagle Point star Mike Nelmes figures to step in for Bettineski when the Raiders meet UC-Davis in a Tuesday night dual meet at Shasta High School in Redding. A pair of former Southern Oregon Conference standouts claimed titles for Oregon. Darryl Christian of Grants Pass bested Larry Quisel of Boise State, 7-2 in the 157 final and Crater High product Doug Lee decisioned Anton Telamantes of Lassen Community College, 10-4, for the 184 crown. Southern Oregon's Jason Gutches, a former South Medford standout who transferred from Oregon State, didn't compete because of knee infection. Women's Basketball CHICO, Calif. -- Nada Janackovic and Denise Berry had impressive outings as Southern Oregon University improved to 4-0 on the season with a 75-64 victory over Chico State in the Coslet Classic. "This is a really good win for us," SOU coach Shirley Huyett said. "Chico is playing pretty good right now and we were in control pretty much the whole way." Janackovic netted 26 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, blocked three shots, and recorded three steals. Berry added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Southern Oregon outrebounded Chico State 42-39. "(Outrebounding Chico) was one of the things we really worked on," Huyett said. "I think this is a good accomplishment." The Raiders conclude Coslet Classic action 5 p.m. today against New Mexico Highlands. "Winning Friday night against Humboldt State and Saturday night against Chico State sets us up as a good team," Huyett said. "We still have things to work on, but its another step on the way to having a really good season. Lindsay Taylor finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Raiders and Ali Richards doled out seven assists. "We just had a bad start in the second half and never got back over the hump," SOU coach Brian McDermott said. "We played better than we did Friday night, just not well enough." The Raiders were led by Tom Chipps with 24 points and Amos Baker with seven rebounds. Chris Schmerbach added 16 points and Ryan Valley added 14 points and six rebounds. Southern Oregon (1-3) hosts Puget Sound Christian at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Cross Country KENOSHA, Wisc. -- Becky Julian competed for Southern Oregon University in the NAIA cross country championships and covered the course in 20 minutes, seven seconds -- six seconds off her personal best, to finish around the middle of the pack. "She was close to a PR on an extremely tough course and finished around 170th," SOU coach Hans Voskes said. "It was just a great performance."
