The first four meetings held in Baker City, Pendleton, Eugene and Salem drew a total of more than 1,000 people. “Hearing firsthand from community members has been invaluable as OLCC begins to implement Oregon’s recreational marijuana law,” OLCC Chairman Rob Patridge said in a press release. “We want to hear from residents of Southern Oregon and around the state about what they think marijuana regulation should look like.” The 11 listening sessions being held around the state are the first steps in a year-long rule-making process that will include meetings of the commission and rules advisory committee meetings. “OLCC is committed to a transparent and inclusive public process to help us implement the law in a way that protects children, keeps our communities safe, creates economic opportunity and brings the recreational marijuana industry into the regulated market,” Patridge said in the release. Under voter-approved Measure 91, possession of recreational marijuana becomes legal on July 1 of this year. At that time, p eople 21 and older will be allowed to possess up to 8 ounces in their home and 1 ounce in a public place — but will not be allowed to consume it in a public place. The law also allows up to four marijuana plants per household. In addition, people  can possess up to 1 pound of solid edibles, 72 ounces of marijuana-infused liquid and 1 ounce of marijuana extract. The Oregon Legislature is currently reviewing the new law and may offer amendments, which can be adopted by the body without a further statewide vote. The OLCC will also establish rules for the new law and for establishing commercial outlets. The OLCC must begin accepting applications for commercial licenses next January, with retail stores to open by late 2016. For more information, see http://marijuana.oregon.gov .
