Made me wonder, how many of the Tall Firs were from in-state, or was that an imported crew, as well? — Harold F., Medford You've got it straight, Harold. The present Ducks roster has six Californians, three Canadians and an Israeli, but no Oregonians. That's a sharp contrast to the "Tall Firs" of 1939, which had four starters who were Oregon high school products, and eight of the 11 players who made the trip to Evanston, Ill., where the Pacific Coast Conference champs defeated Ohio State, 46-33, in the NCAA title, were Oregonians. Four players on the 1939 roster came from Astoria. The starters were Bobby Anet and Wally Johansen from Astoria, John Dick from The Dalles, Laddie Gale from Oakridge, and the tallest of them all, 6-foot-8 Slim Wintermute, was from Longview, Wash., across the Columbia River.
