Mustangs fall shy in bid for Aloha title ALOHA � The Medford Mustangs couldn�t cash in on their opportunities in the championship game of the eight-team American Legion baseball John Nero Tournament at Aloha High School Tuesday. After winning their first six games of the tournament, the Mustangs dropped the final two, including a 7-5 loss to the Alpenrose Red Sox in the title game. Medford (22-11) had men on base in every inning but one and ended up stranding 11 baserunners in the game. In the seventh inning, the Mustangs scored one run and had the tying runs on base with one out. Charlie Jensen opened the seventh with a double and moved to third on Chuck Shine�s bloop single. Ken Halpin�s ground out put runners on second and third and Matt Skundrick followed with a single to right that scored Jensen. But Alpenrose retired the final two batters to win the championship. Medford�s 10-hit attack was led by Colby Gonzales� 3-for-3 performance. Gonzales, the state�s Class 4A prep baseball player of the year, went 13-for-26 in the event and received the outstanding hitter of the tournament award. Medford hosts the Bay Area Rams in an Area 4 doubleheader at 5 p.m. today at Miles Field.
