One council seat will also be contested, while two others each have a single candidate. The filing deadline was Thursday. Cecil defeated Stricker for the mayor’s seat in November 2010. Cecil got 909 votes to Stricker's 847. Stricker was elected to a four-year council term in November 2012. This spring she was appointed to fill a vacancy on Jackson County Fire District No. 5’s board of directors. Stricker was on the council from 2002 to 2004 and has also served on the city’s parks and planning commissions. Cecil was a councilman from 2007 through 2010. He also served on the Planning Commission for seven years. Incumbent Joan Dean will face challenger Meadowsweet Levi for Council Seat 3. Dean was elected to the position for two years in November 2012 when she ran unopposed. She had previously served on the city’s Budget Committee. Levi has regularly urged the council during public input to refrain from spraying pesticides on city property. She is active in groups that pull weeds on city and school properties to prevent pesticide use. Daniel Wise has filed for Council Seat 1, currently held by former mayor Don Steyskal, who was appointed to the post in March 2013 when Chris Auer resigned. Steyskal chose not to run. Wise is associated with Compuwise Solutions, LLC, a consulting firm. Incumbent Ryan Pederson will seek election to Council Seat 5. He was appointed to the position in June 2013 when Councilwoman Diane Glendenning resigned. Pederson previously served on the Parks Commission. Tony Boom is a freelance writer living in Ashland.
