The Klondike fire near Selma in Josephine County has been declared a megafire after surpassing the 100,000 acre mark. According to an Incident Information System release Friday, the fire has grown to approximately 102,168 acres and was 40 percent contained. Burning in the Kalmiopsis Wildnerness, the same place that as the 190,000-acre Chetco Bar fire in 2017, the Klondike fire started July 15 when lightening struck the region, igniting numerous fires in Southern Oregon. The National Interagency Fire Center defines a megafire as one that burns at least 100,000 acres. The Biscuit fire, which burned 500,000 acres in 2002, also ignited in the same area. Northeast winds are expected for much of this weekend, meaning the heaviest smoke concentration should shift toward the coast near Brookings.
