Crews gain on Cable Crossing fire, which has cost $2.5 million to fight so far Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 3, 2015 at 11:38 AM Posted Aug. 3, 2015 at 11:38 AM » Social News A cooler, cloudy Sunday with a sprinkling of rain helped firefighters make progress in corralling the Cable Crossing fire, which started the afternoon of July 28 along Highway 138 six miles east of Glide. Crews have set a trail around the 1,674-acre blaze and consider it 20 percent contained. Officials said there is no estimate yet on when the fire will be contained. About 1,250 people are working to stop the fire, officials reported in an update this morning. Two large air tankers, three single-engine air tankers and 15 helicopters are attacking from above while dozens of fire engines, water tenders and dozers crawl the slopes around the fire. Authorities estimate that fighting the Cable Crossing fire has cost about $2.5 million so far. Temperatures are expected to warm up into the 90s again today and humidity likely will drop, so the fire could start to burn more actively again, officials said. The extremely hot and windy conditions that drove the fire last week aren't forecast to return. Crew bosses reported feeling cautiously optimistic that they had taken the fight out of the fire and that crews would be able to strengthen fire lines today. As a precautionary measure, residents on Little River Road between the Peel Store and the Wolf Creek Trail Head and along Highway 138 in the vicinity of Evergreen Lane and Honeycut Road are asked to be ready to evacuate.
