"A lot of people don't take these district elections seriously, but they don't realize these are candidates that are spending your local tax dollars and deciding on things that affect people in their everyday lives," said Jackson County Clerk Chris Walker. "They are your school board, your fire districts, the transportation district — all important services." Those wishing to run have until March 19 to file (see http://jacksoncountyor.org/clerk/Elections/Election-Forms). The election is May 19. Ashland School Board, Medford School Board and the Rogue Community College board each have three positions open. The Southern Oregon Education Service District also has three open seats, one in Eagle Point and the other two in Klamath Falls. The Jackson County Library District, approved by voters last May, has three seats up for grabs. Voters will also decide directors on the boards of Rogue Valley Sewer Services, the Charlotte Anne Water District, Jacksonville Highway Water District, Medford Rural Fire District 2, Applegate Rural Fire District and Greensprings Rural Fire District. Walker said she hoped interest in both serving and voting on district boards would be high. "It's a hugely significant election. It's unfortunate that the elections that take precedence are the big congressional races when these are the things that affect our everyday lives," Walker said. "We usually average about 30 percent turnout, which is low for our area but high compared to others. I guess vote by mail gets us at least a little better turnout than other places."  Reach Medford freelance writer Buffy Pollock at [email protected].
