Born June 2, 1941 in Medford, Ore. to Glen W. and Ruth M. (Peebler) Smith, he was a retired cabinet maker and lifelong resident of Jackson County. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing the Rogue River, hiking, and spending time with his family at his beloved cabin at Lake of the Woods. He graduated from Medford High School in 1960 and served in the United States Army Reserves. Gary apprenticed woodworking until he opened his own shop, Gary Smith Custom Cabinets in 1966 which he owned and operated until he retired in 2009 and immediately started working on his golf game. He was a lifetime member of the Oregon Hunter's association, coached boy's little league baseball, and was a 4-H leader for Gold Valley Beef Club. Gary was a life member 32nd degree Royal Arch Master Mason, Shriner, and an active member and past director of the Royal Order of Jesters. He loved his mules and rode in parades all across the Pacific Northwest. Two Rogue Valley pioneer families united when Gary married Francis Lee Hamilton September 25, 1965 in Medford, Ore. and they shared 50 years of marriage together. Gary is survived by his devoted wife, Frances; his son, William (Scott) Smith and his wife, Connie; daughter, Toni L. Hero, D.O. and her husband, Daniel; three sisters, Esther Kennedy, Sonja Dedrick, and Jean Weinhold; his brother, Stan Smith; granddaughters, Montana and Ellie; and grandson, Devin. He was preceded in death by his parents. All those who knew and loved Gary are welcome to a celebration of life lunch buffet reception from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Inn at the Commons. Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Fla. 33607.
