The break-ins, reported Friday, occurred in the 7800 block of Jacqueline Way. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department reported someone had opened the doors on two unlocked cars and swiped a phone, keys, knives, garage-door openers and a variety of paperwork from glove compartments. An attempted break-in on a third car, a minivan, failed. Lt. Christine Bronson said the thieves had tried to access the vehicle through a sliding side door, but it did not open far enough to allow access. "It was ajar when the victim came out. They knew somebody had tried to get in," Bronson said. A witness reported seeing three young men in the area all three nights prior to the break-ins. The men are described as being between 17 and 24 years old and were reportedly hanging out on the targeted street around midnight. One of the men is described as 5-feet-7 and about 140 pounds wearing a blue, hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a baseball hat. Another was reportedly riding a silver and black Mongoose bicycle and wearing a blue shirt with a silver design. He also wore a baseball hat, as did the third man, who rode a bicycle with a fat rear tire and wore a green T-shirt and black pants. He had "Afro" style hair. Investigators said the men are not considered suspects, but police would like to talk to them about the break-ins to find out whether they saw something. Anyone with additional information about the break-ins is asked to contact the sheriff's department tip line at 541-774-8333. They can also contact Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon at 1-800-850-0580. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest. Callers can be anonymous.
