Reported Pedestrian Accidents, 1999-2001
Pedestrian safety is also an issue of concern. Analy sis of accident data reveals that there are a num ber of
locations within the Urban Growth Boundary where co llisions involving pedestrian have been reported.
Highway 62 and Riverside Avenue are among roadway s that have experienced num erous pedestrian-
related accidents in recent y ears. Several streets in the downtown area also experienced a num ber of
accidents. Im provem ents such as installation of traffi c control devices, m arked crosswalks to define safe
crossing locations, and construction of corner ra mps to m eet Am ericans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
standards are way s to enhance pedestrian safety . Table 10-8 sum marizes recently reported pedestrian
accidents in the Medford area at the intersections of arterial/arterial and arterial/collector streets.
As indicated in the table, there were 17 reported acci dents involving pedestrians at the m ajor intersections
in the City. Most of these accidents resulted from motorists failing to see and/or y ield to pedestrians in
crosswalks where traffic signal control was in place. Accident reports indicated that m any of the m otor
vehicle drivers were distracted at the tim e of the collision. A few accidents occurred involving
pedestrians m aking m id-block crossings near the inte rsection of Main with Oakdale and along Riverside
Avenue.
