The All Sports Pond in Grants Pass will get the privately raised trout bought for Saturday’s Youth Angling Enhancement Program, a state-private partnership that tries to get rainbows in the hands of smiling kids. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the pond, which is at the Josephine County All Sports Park, 1690 Webster Road. Gift bags will be distributed and fishing gear will be available for use during the event, which is designed to give kids a great chance to catch their first fish without getting muscled out by adults. The 200-foot by 300-foot artificial lake is small and will team with 100 16-inch "trophy" trout and 400 legal-sized trout stocked just for the event. Organizers cannot legally keep adults from partaking, but they hope adults will honor the program’s intent. Advertisement "We’re prepared for 75 (kids) throughout the day," says Chuck Fustish, volunteer program coordinator for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Central Point office. "We want the adults to hold back or come to help the kids," Fustish says. Members of a new bass-fishing group, the Medford-based Crater Bass Club, will be there to assist young anglers in catching the stocked trout. Club President Duke Barris says many of his 18-member club will be there to help kids catch trout. "Just seeing the looks on these kids’ faces is great," Barris says. "It’s always a pleasure to see kids catch a fish and get that smile, no matter what species it is." That’s the goal behind the two-year, $100,000 pilot program, with is funded equally by the Oregon Legislature and the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation. Oregon angling regulations allow kids 13 and under to fish for free, while kids 14-17 need a juvenile license. The limit is five trout a day, with no more than one bigger than 20 inches. Similar events were held across Oregon, including in April at Whetstone Pond at the Denman Wildlife Area. The fish were bought from Lake’s Trout Farm in Noti. The stocking cost for Saturday’s event, including hauling fees, is about $870, according to agency records.
