Doors to the drugstore were locked Thursday morning when the 14-year-old business would have typically opened for the day, and signage was removed before lunchtime from the building, which is at the corner of Riverside Avenue and Jackson Street. Owner Isaac Wine, who purchased the business in 2006 — then housed in a barely 50-square-foot cubby inside the downtown Woolworth's building — had forwarded the business number to a nearby Rite-Aid. Wine's letter to customers, mailed out Wednesday, stated that customer files had been sold to Rite-Aid, while the fate of the building that housed the drugstore for the past two years has yet to be determined. The letter signed by Wine, who reportedly sold his Lone Pine Pharmacy six months ago with little public notice, confirmed the closure was due to rising drug costs, decreasing insurance premiums and new regulations. The letter also noted that Wine "fought to stay afloat" but had ultimately "run out of remedies." Wine did not return calls seeking comment. Wine was known as a supplier for hundreds of mental health clients and for delivering prescriptions to disabled customers. A Rite-Aid employee contacted at district offices, but who declined to be identified, told the Mail Tribune that Wine closed the pharmacy due to increasing regulations, and that the closure was done quietly to prevent customer panic. —Buffy Pollock is a freelance writer living in Medford.
