Prep boys basketball Phoenix drops opener in Gold Beach tourney GOLD BEACH -- Del Norte broke open a close contest with a 22-13 spree in the third quarter Friday as the Warriors handed Phoenix a 66-42 setback in the first round of the Gold Beach Tournament. Juniors Buck Pierce and Charles Webster keyed Del Norte's decisive run that turned a 30-22 halftime advantage into a 52-35 bulge. Pierce scored nine of his 24 points in the third quarter, while the 6-foot-5 Webster tossed in seven of his 20. "They were too big and strong for us," Phoenix coach Randy Shipley said. "Webster killed us inside, we just couldn't contain him. Pierce was an outstanding players and good penetrator." Webster added eight rebounds. Gabe Willard scored 19 points for the Pirates (0-2), including four 3-pointers. "When he gets his opportunities, he doesn't miss too often from out there," Shipley said.
