Sheriff: Beware of 'porch pirates'

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to take precautions against “porch pirates” who nab packages that have been delivered to homes. Throughout the year, law enforcement agencies receive reports of thefts of delivered items, often snagged from a mailbox or front porch. But with a higher volume of deliveries during the holiday shopping season, the potential for thefts goes up. Deputies urge residents to think ahead about how their packages will be delivered before making online purchases this holiday season. While law enforcement personnel are keeping an eye on neighborhoods, residents can do their part to help prevent thefts: Check your package tracking information so you know when to expect deliveries. Tracking will often tell you when a package shipped, when it’s out for delivery and what has been delivered. If you’re not at home during the day, have packages delivered to a trusted neighbor or your workplace. See if you can pick up your package at the shipping company’s local office or the local store of a chain. Install surveillance cameras around your home. The presence of cameras will often deter thieves. If not, the video can help law enforcement track down the thieves. If you see a person or vehicle following a delivery truck around, call dispatch so law enforcement can check out the situation. Try to get a good description of the vehicle with its license plate number, plus a description of the people involved.
