"Directions," a retrospective exhibit by regional artist and teacher Walt Padgett, will open June 16 at the Rogue Gallery & Art Center in Medford, 40 S. Bartlett St. Padgett will be on hand to discuss his work at the opening reception to be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The collection includes Japanese and Western style woodblock prints, sculpture, oil and watercolor paintings and prints created by Padgett over the past 35 years. The pieces are not organized chronologically, but thematically, and show significant works and representative pieces of the different artistic directions that Padgett has explored. The pieces reveal the way Padgett works to develop his diverse visual ideas. Viewers will be able to see the detailed relationships between the pieces. Advertisement The majority of Padgett's two-dimensional works are landscapes, but he delves into the abstract and prefers the influence of the human figure when working in sculpture. His inspirations include the landscape from his native Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, while infusing his love for Northwest and Japanese cultures. Padgett refers to himself as a Pacific Rim artist, meaning he fuses images from one Pacific Rim to the other — the similarities in the landscapes of Japan and the Northwest appeal to him. He has made four trips to Japan. Padgett completed a masters in fine arts degree with an emphasis in sculpture at Florida State University. His passion for diverse art forms and cultures led him to teaching, and he joined the faculty at Rogue Community College in 1971, where he founded RCC's art department. He taught at RCC full-time for over thirty years before retiring four years ago. He continues to teach part-time classes at RCC and workshops at the Rogue Gallery & Art Center. "Directions" will be displayed through July 22. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. "Rambling Geometrics," a collection of watercolor paintings created in a range of artistic styles by Alice Stambaugh, will be displayed through July 1 at Ambus Contemporary Art, 21 N. Bartlett St., Medford. An artist's reception for Stambaugh will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. June 16. Stambaugh's paintings lead the eye on a path of shapes and motion, letting stories emerge from the images. Ambus Art also features works by Virginia Andrade, Darla Baack, Eileen Bowie, Dianne Erickson, Eileen Goldwyn, Janet E. Higgins, Nancy Jo Mullen, Lisa D. Peterson and Meloney Quady. "Lighthouses and Touches of Oregon," a collection of works in pen, pencil and watercolor by Margo Garnett, will be featured through the month of June at Art du Jour Gallery, 320 Middleford Alley, Medford. Art du Jour will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 16, but the artist's reception for Garnett will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 17. Garnett finds inspiration for her work in the landscapes of Oregon. She is a native of Iowa and studied art at Marycrest College in Davenport. She also studied at Oregon College in Portland. Part of the proceeds from the show's sales will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Art du Jour Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call 770-3190.
