Smells like medicine I have several marijuana grow sites in my neighborhood that are pungent in October. The reason I love the smell is that I've seen the true medicinal value of the plant. My husband of 37 years had more than 50 cancerous tumors on his liver. By ingesting oils of cannabis, every one of those tumors disappeared within a six-month period. Oregon Healthy Science University and his local doctor had never seen anything like this before. It was miraculous. This is an historic time. The people have voted and this plant is finally legal to possess and grow. Without the side effects of chemotherapy drugs and radiation, many cancers can be eradicated! Unfortunately, my husband didn't make it due to complications from hepatitis C, but he died cancer-free, documented. It could be you or someone you love that ends up with cancer. Isn't it worth putting up with a few weeks or a month's worth of an organic odor, knowing the value of this plant? Please find the patience and tolerance as we move through this historic transition time. I had an extra year with my soulmate because of this plant, which was simply grown from our earth. E. Read Ashland Toles wrong, again First off, Mr. Toles' "cartoons " are never humorous. Other cartoonists have given me occasion to laugh out loud, whether or not I agreed with their premise. His pathetic "art" is wasted space in your paper. Just my opinion. Secondly, Mr. Toles' cartoon in the Dec. 4 edition suggests that the NRA is responsible for "random gun violence." Using that logic, the AAA must be responsible for auto accidents, which by far kill many more innocent people than guns do! Politicians continue to enact laws, most of which technically do infringe on the right to bear arms, and yet in California which has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country, terrorists were able to acquire guns, ammo and bomb-making materials. Still, liberals continue to push restrictions of legal law-abiding gun owners who didn't do anything. Rick Nelson Medford A success story Since 1989 the Jacksonville Woodlands Association has been protecting the cultural and natural heritage of historic Jacksonville. During this time we have protected nearly 300 acres of historic woodlands that surround nearly 70 percent of Jacksonville's congressionally designated National Historic Landmark District. We have also constructed 16 miles of interpretive and recreational trails. Our success is because of a strong core of community supporters, a dedicated group of volunteers and the continued coverage of the Mail Tribune. Over the past 26 years the Mail Tribune has run 110 articles about the Jacksonville Woodlands, covering such topics as our land purchases, new trail openings and our many guided hikes. Thank you for making the Jacksonville Woodlands preservation project the most successful, all-volunteer land conservation organization in the state of Oregon. Larry Smith Jacksonville Unconstitutional draft The opinion page on Monday offered a Bloomberg View piece about women in combat and in the draft. Featured in the piece was a description of the current requirement for registration with Selective Service and the penalties for failing to register for the draft. I would counter that opinion with a simple reading of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits involuntary servitude, which the draft obviously is. Since the inception of this country, impressment into military service by force has been repugnant and was in fact one of the causes of the War of 1812 against the English. The draft should be struck down as illegal under the 13th Amendment since it is in principle no different than slavery, and it should certainly NOT be extended to women. Oscar Zuniga Medford
