Allen Shane Ledbetter, 25, admitted in Jackson County Circuit Court that he punched three store employees, knocking one of them, a woman, unconscious, Aug. 26. He then fled the store with his girlfriend, Destany Snook, a minor at the time, with about $40 in stolen items, including bras, screws and paint. Court-appointed defense attorney Michael Kellington said Ledbetter was under the influence of laced marijuana and was unaware until "late" in the visit that Snook had hidden items from the store in her purse. Kellington said Ledbetter delivered a "knockout" punch to one of the store associates in defense of his girlfriend. Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Markiewicz read a letter from one of the victims. "Defendant was very wrong to hit a lady as hard as he did," the victim wrote. Circuit Judge David Hoppe said he had overseen a case last year in which Ledbetter allegedly assaulted a woman with a soda in a store and caused more than $500 in damage to tobacco products there. "There's a bunch of anger in you," Hoppe said. Ledbetter pleaded guilty to two felony charges of third-degree assault and a felony count of second-degree robbery. Hoppe sentenced Ledbetter to 37 months in prison, ordered him to pay $5,046 in restitution and banned him from all Walmart stores. Hoppe told Ledbetter the plea bargain was because of the "mercy" of the victim who was knocked unconscious when she hit her head on the concrete and who had to be transported to the hospital in an ambulance. He urged Ledbetter to justify the victim's mercy by leaving prison a law-abiding citizen. "You literally should be going to prison for 70 months," Hoppe said.
