We here at Since You Asked are of the opinion that we have written exhaustively about Voorhies, widely regarded as the birthplace of the Rogue Valley pear industry. Our Since You Asked Bible, Oregon Geographic Names, identifies Voorhies as a "station three miles south of Medford." Established in 1906, it was named for Col. Gordon Voorhies, a pear baron in the Rogue Valley’s early days. Voorhies was a native of Kentucky and a West Point graduate who served in the Spanish-American War and World War I. Advertisement You may be more familiar, however, with a namesake remnant: the Voorhies Mansion, the lovingly restored family home that is the site of Eden Valley Orchards, just south of Medford.
