Phoenix police Tuesday afternoon arrested Adam Klayton Keith Syphers on three counts of first-degree sodomy, a Class A felony. If convicted, Syphers faces eight to 25 years in prison under Measure 11 sentencing guidelines. Appearing at his arraignment in Jackson County Circuit Court by video conference from jail, Syphers sat quietly Wednesday afternoon as Judge Kelly Ravassipour read the charges against him and family members of the victim sobbed loudly in the Medford courtroom. According to a probable cause affidavit, Syphers had been a babysitter for the victim, who was younger than 12 at the time of the abuse. The victim told police that Syphers would often lock her brother in a bedroom and sexually assault her. Syphers has previous convictions in Jackson County for delivery of a Schedule III controlled substance in 2011 and for delivery of marijuana in 2007. Ravassipour set Syphers' bail at $1 million and ordered him to have no contact with the victim or any minors. He'll also be required to submit to polygraph tests if he posts bail.
