C.P. shooting victim dies; no arrests made A Central Point man who was shot in his home early this month died over the weekend at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. Russell Marvin Slack, 50, likely died as a result of the bullet wound, but an autopsy would be performed to confirm that, said Central Point police Sgt. Steve McGee. Police are still investigating the case, and haven't charged anyone with the shooting. "We want to stress that we really don't believe this was a random act and that Mr. Slack was targeted," McGee said. The shooting occurred just before 1:45 a.m. on Jan. 3 at Slack's home at 475 Freeman Road, where he had lived for several years, McGee said. McGee said police were able to get only sketchy details from Slack. They also found his Rottweiler-mix dog, Bowser, who had been shot in the head. The dog survived. Police said the crime looked like a burglary, but have said the shooting may have occurred for a variety of reasons, including retaliation or revenge. On Jan. 7, police served a search warrant at 515 W. 11th St. in Medford, where they were looking for drugs and for evidence connected to the shooting. In addition to finding drugs, police found stained clothing that's being examined by the Oregon State Police forensics lab. They found some other evidence, too, but police didn't find a gun they were looking for. The resident of the house has not been charged in the shooting. Slack, a landlord, had evicted the man before, and there was a continuing dispute between the two. "We're still tracking down people who might have heard what happened," McGee said. "It's just taken us a long time to do that.'' Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Central Point police at 664-5578.
