Juan Gabriel Camacho, 22, and 17-year-old Travis Terrance Cook pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court Thursday to charges of second-degree robbery. The pair on May 30 threatened 53-year- old Juan Rodriguez with a rifle and stole $800 in cash from him, said Allan Smith, deputy district attorney for Jackson County. Rodriguez met Camacho in the neighborhood of West Jackson Street when the younger man asked him to point out a good restaurant. Rodriguez had recently cashed his paycheck from Bear Creek Corp. and offered to buy Camacho a meal at Red Robin, Smith said. At dinner, Camacho most likely saw a large amount of cash in his host’s wallet, Smith added. Camacho escorted Rodriguez to a friend’s house after dinner, left him there to pick up some beer and returned with Cook, Smith said. The two later offered to drive Rodriguez home in a friend’s pickup truck. But they passed the house, pulled over in the 3000 block of Griffin Creek Road and robbed him, Smith said. Rodriguez thought the two younger men were joking when they pulled the gun and Cook demanded his wallet, Smith said. Camacho translated the demand for Rodriguez, who only speaks Spanish, Smith added. Advertisement The pair left Rodriguez by the side of the road. Camacho, who lives in the 300 block of Ogara Street, was arrested about two weeks after the crime. Ten days later, police caught up with Cook at a house in the 700 block of West Second Street, Medford. Because Rodriguez was not injured, Smith said he exempted the crime from the mandatory prison term — nearly six years — under the state’s minimum sentencing law. However, Cook was treated as an adult under Measure 11. Camacho was sentenced to four years and two months in prison while Cook will serve two years and 10 months. Camacho got a longer sentence because of his previous criminal record, Smith said. Camacho also pleaded guilty Thursday to three counts of possession of methamphetamine and no contest to a charge of delivering meth. Four other charges were dismissed in exchange for his plea. As part of their sentence the pair are required to return the money stolen from Rodriguez.
