PREP BASEBALL Tornado holds steady in Buckaroo opener By Staff reports Mar 25, 2019 10:28 PM A A PENDLETON — North Medford sophomore pitcher Cody Borraggine held up his end on the mound and the Black Tornado baseball team used a five-run sixth inning in an 8-2 win over David Douglas Monday in the opening game of the Buckaroo Classic at Blue Mountain Community College. Borraggine allowed three hits with five strikeouts and two walks to steady North Medford (3-3), which continues tournament play Tuesday with games against Redmond and La Salle Prep. “Cody has a bulldog mentality,” said North Medford head coach Brett Wolfe, who also credited catcher Taven Passey for his handling of Borraggine’s pitch selection. “He’s a competitor. He’s not afraid to step up and take the ball, and he just goes out and competes.” The game was tied 2-all when North Medford surged to a 7-2 lead in the sixth inning. Josh Baptiste got things going with a single and moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt. After an RBI double by Ryan Sandoval, fellow senior Brady Buchanan singled and then both scored on a two-run single by Ryan Kloek. Jeremiah Huffman added an RBI single and another run scored on Passey’s grounder that was misplayed at first base to give the Tornado all the cushion it would need. Sandoval finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Buchanan was 3-for-4 with two runs, Kloek 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs and Huffman 2-for-4 with one run, two RBIs and two stolen bases. EAGLE POINT 8-6, NORTH EUGENE 0-2: At Eagle Point, Jake Leeper’s towering second inning two-run home run was all Eagle Point would need with Skyler Gaudern tossing six shutout innings in the first game of a Midwestern League twin-bill sweep for the Eagles. Leeper gave the Eagles (3-3, 3-1 MWL) a 2-0 lead with his homer to left field. He finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Gaudern gave up just three hits, struck out eight and walked three for his first win of the season. Both Kyler Kendrick and Lucas Meerten went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Eagles. Meerten also scored twice. In Game 2, Domenic Fontana’s two-run double put the Eagles up 4-0 in the second inning. Fontana finished 2-for-3 and scored once while teammate Kolbi Blevins drove in three runs and was 2-for-4. The Highlanders dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in MWL play. Zach Dungey had a two-run double and RBI single in the seventh inning for his first varsity hits for Phoenix (5-2), while Freedom Martinez added a two-run triple in the frame and later scored. Monte Spence’s RBI single put the Pirates ahead for the first time in the contest.
